About Disruptive Beats:

Disruptive Beats is a brand new series of EPs showcasing a new wave of talent in the breaks scene, artists who are reinventing the sounds and the very scene itself. Each EP features an artist with a new original track, a remix, plus their interpretation of a back catalogue classic from the Ground Level vaults.

The series will finish with an album bringing all the sounds of the EPs together in a DJ mix that will show that breaks is still relevant in modern dance music.

About Part 4 – Beatsmack:

Beatsmack will already be known to many of you for their releases on Miles Dyson's Plasmapool label and dynamic remixes on labels such as Dead Famous and On A Break. Here with Ruff Em Up they present their funkier side, combining huge synth lead with funky beats and stuttery vocals. Label owner Andy McAllister steps up for the remix taking the track on a rhythm led fusion of Miami Bass and baile funk grooves. Beatsmack update Disko by the Shopliftas, originally the 11th release on Ground Level, for the final track on the EP. On this remix they go straight for the jugular, with big rolling drums and nasty synths, yet still retaining an element of funk.

Rennie Pilgrem - The Space Cowboys RIPEcast May 2011

This week The Space Cowboys are pleased to welcome to the RIPEcast our good friend, the venerable Rennie Pilgrem.

Few artists have made a greater, more lasting impression on dance music than has Rennie. In the mid 90s, he all but invented the sound the we know today as Nu Skool breaks (he actually coined the term 'nu skool breaks''). He is the founder of the respected TCR (Thursday Club Recordings) label, now in its 18th year. He is one half of the celebrated NuFunk project known as The Bush Doctors with Jem Panufnik of the Fingerlickin label. And he is the man behind the acclaimed "Street Legal" series, Rennie's homage to 70s funk. Those are just a few highlights from a long list of accomplishments in a twenty-one year career that has made Rennie a luminary in the international scene.

For his appearance on the RIPEcast this week, Rennie gives us a sampling of the newest sound emerging from the London underground. Some call it "Nu Jungle", others refer to it as "Jungle Breaks" or "140". Rennie admits he's not sure what to call it exactly but says, "Think of old school rave, early Jungle, future sounds with the speed of Dub Step and you are close."
